One thing that I really like that the games did was how so much of everything you do is being in rooms talking to people.
And what they were talking about was the politics of it all. When I think back to the first four seasons of Game of Thrones (you know, the good ones), the scenes that stick out to me aren’t the battles or fantasy setting, but my favorite characters talking. Because I loved to talk to my squadmates. It’s the reason that I love the Mass Effect games the way I do. One of the things that I love most in novels isn’t the action or the grand descriptions of fantastic vistas (like Tolkien just LOVED to do, in page after page after page after page…), but listening to characters who are interesting talk. There is so much lore and relationships between various factions that get explored. The politics of the world that Geralt inhabits is just as much of a character in these novels as the named ones. And the conversation has this very decidedly political angle. See, as I read through the books, where there are monsters and there are sword fights, there was something that I noticed a LOT more that is what has kept me interested – people talking. As I started to get into the books, I realized what it was that stuck with me in the wrong way. Don’t get it twisted) rubbed me the wrong way.
Plus, something about the Netflix series (as much as I do like Henry Cavill as Geralt. Now, the games are set after the events of the book series, so they could make their own narrative, but I thought it would be cool to learn about the books they are based on. I remember my partner had gotten the first two book in the Witcher book series, and I love The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. My passion for reading was back, and I was enjoying it. After I got through the first six books in the Harry Potter franchise (because I think the seventh is really boring), I was looking for something else to read.
