Cliff Massa III, EΔ ’71, who chaired the Educational Trust and has done substantial work on transcribing early Alpha documents, had made a presentation a few years ago to the Executive Council and Educational Trust about some of the early documents. But in the rest of the Constitution, a number of substantive changes were made in both 1844 and in 1845. The Preamble text is the same in all three (though slightly different than today’s).

The “second” is in a Theta journal which began in 1844. The “first” that we’ve found is in the Mu founding journal. The 1845 text from Springfield was at least the third version of our Constitution with the Preamble. The Constitution and its Preamble didn’t actually originate in Springfield that October of 1845. Victor did an amazing job of working with the archivist at the Springfield Public Library to decode and figure out the original location. In June 1845, mere months before Chi Psi’s first Convention, it had been rebuilt and refurbished. Tragedy struck the original building in 1844 when a fire burned it to the ground.

We know many readers enjoyed the piece in the Fall 2017 P&G by Victor Jaworski, IΔ ’07, entitled “Searching for Chi Psi’s Preamble …Or… Seeking the Site of Chi Psi’s Formative First National Convention.” Much of the story was about Victor’s search for the physical site of the old hotel in downtown Springfield, Massachusetts, that hosted the first all-Alpha gathering.
